Hi I’m William Long, owner of Longshots Photography and the host of PhotoWatchDog, an advocacy initiative aimed to protect photographers’ rights and income.
I would love to help you enhance your photographic expertise, learn new skills and solid camera craft.
I’ve been shooting images for over 40 years; 30 of those as a professional. My portfolio covers everything from technical or engineering landscapes, to ballerinas or special effects.
In 2013, I was honoured to receive the AIPP Australian Commercial Photographer of the Year award.
I love what I do! I want to share with you my passion for creating beautiful work and help you rediscover — or uncover, unlock — your own photographic talent.
I believe every creative person is extraordinary. I can show you how to unleash your creativity using your camera, your lens, light and your environment.
What people say:
“If you want a shortcut to shooting professionally and learning the business of photography and industry ethics then here it is! Lots and lots of real experience on offer. I wish I had someone like William around when I was starting out … if you couldn’t find your way into the very rare full-time assisting jobs then you had to work it out yourself … much longer road then what William is offering. If you’re trying to break into the industry then it’s a no brainer”. Stefan Jannides

Testimonials
Some of my students have been kind enough to express their gratitude after taking one of my workshops. This is what they said (you can read more feedback on my Facebook):
Vanessa Laverty:
“Thankyou William for another fabulous one to one workshop. As usual, a day filled with lots of helpful advice and learning new techniques. Feedback on my folio was most advantageous. If you’re umming and aahhing about doing a workshop with William, just do it — you won’t regret it.”
Shelley Allsop:
“Had an amazing time at mentoring with you William. You are so knowledgable and no doubt, with your advice I can take my business to the next level. I must admit I was very nervous having someone with such a portfolio of awards and experience come to my house, but you were the most casual easy going friendliest guy which made the mentoring for me so much easier and gave me so much more confidence in my work. Thank you so much for you time!!!”
Colleen Harris:
“I knew from the moment I spoke with you that I was in capable hands. From phone call discussions to emails to Facebook chats, you reassured me. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted from the mentoring… I just knew it was time to step up. In a single day you have opened my eyes and helped me realise what potential I have, and how to harness it.
Your wealth of knowledge is extraordinary! My field of work is different to yours and at times I doubted myself that these new skills you were giving me weren’t something I could implement into my everyday work life… Oh how I was wrong! I had a moment of clarity on the plane ride home, and I knew that these where skills I could use every day. My first shoot after the mentoring rendered images that were exactly what I have been trying to achieve. I wonder now why I never did this before. William thank you, thank you for giving me the skills to make my ordinary work something extraordinary!”
Analia Paino:
“Thank you for two days of insightful, constructive and inspiring guidance and advice. With such an incredible breadth of experience and knowledge shared openly and genuinely, it’s hard to go wrong. I’m certainly feeling re-charged and ready to move forward.”
Adam Hourigan M. Photog, AIPP, 28 years experience:
“William’s words ring in my head at nearly every job I do .. you get exactly what you want from every session … this will be one of the most beneficial bits of instruction you will receive anywhere in the country.
Last week, I spent my annual days doing my annual photography check-up at a 2-day One-on-One workshop with Longshots Photography. Frank discussions, new lighting techniques, portfolio reviews – whatever you want to do, nothing is too hard or out of bounds. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in the industry 20 minutes or 28 years, you will come out the other side better.
If you haven’t booked in for a session with William – you’re doing yourself a disservice. Nothing is off limits. Everything is possible. Get amongst it now.
No matter what your skill level, a one-on-one workshop is ideal for anyone looking to refresh their skills. You may look at this photo and think this is the end result, but this is just the start. The first frame, achieved by attention to lighting, metering and absolutely no chimping in camera. Straight into photoshop and a few quick ideas of post-production and this is where the journey begins for an idea. What William brings to me is the technical expertise and the tools to reinforce basics, and then push through them to be able to create the idea in your head easily every time. I would recommend booking your own One on One as soon as possible.”
Colleen Harris:
“Another fantastic learning opportunity spent with William. He is fast becoming not only and extremely knowledgable mentor but a dear friend. His mentoring is straightforward and insightful. I appreciate each time I spend with him and I know he strives to empower me with the tools I need to be a successful and professional photographer.”
Barb Glover:
“Just wanted to say thank you. I have been going back through the 14 pages of notes from our workshop and I am amazed at how much we actually covered. From marketing myself as a photographer, through to contracts, and copyright, a few Photoshop tips and tricks on how to make my images pop, which I have been practicing all day, and then onto better presentation of my website and branding, and a portfolio review etc. I didn’t think we would be able to get through all that. Thank you again, I feel more confident in my ability as a photographer and look forward to taking on new challenges.”
Suellen Cook:
“Thanks William for some fantastic one on one workshopping last weekend, I had such a good time, your hospitality was very enjoyable. I have come away with lots of new ideas and plans for my photography for the year ahead and beyond. Your generosity with your knowledge and advice is very much appreciated. The best part though is the new found confidence I have to continue my fine art photography journey. Thank you for giving me that! Back in focus.”
Shelley Higgs:
“Thanks William so much for my one on one session this morning. You are so wonderfully generous with your time and knowledge and it is great to meet such a supportive and down to earth person. You have boosted my confidence to continue my photography journey and inspired me to be better and to see things with your attention to detail. I would highly recommend this workshop to any professional who wants further development. Thank you so much!”
Daniel Capobianco M. Photog, AIPP:
“Since taking your advice on board regarding quoting and invoicing, I have gained incredible trust and credibility with my clients by simply being open, honest and transparent. You are a wealth of knowledge with incredible experience and it was well worth paying my money and listening to you share with us.”
